Milly decided early this morning that while we were watching and waiting for Daphne that she wanted to be first. She had her nesting box set up in the puppy play pen just to get her ready for what we thought would be Friday-ish. She would have been moved to the whelp area with our plans of then moving Daphne and her babies to the puppy pen once they have a few days to get settled. Ah, the best laid plans. 🙂
Four boys and Three girls were born starting around 12:30 AM and ending at 5:30 this morning. Since we had everything set up for Daphne there was a bit of a scramble to move her and the babies to Daphne whelp area and then move Daphne who was very excited about the babies (Milly not so much excited about Daphne around her new babies). So the dining room and kitchen right now has a  two xpen fence division running through it.  Daphne whelp box will now set up in our bedroom. Our home has become a nursery.
Jeff and I decided the theme for this litter should be the Hobbit, as Milly was very brave stuck in middle earth (puppy play pen instead of in the whelp box ) and did most of the whelp without us. puppies are under the heat lamp and Milly is nesting right now as I type. So, where our dogs usually go on day 62, Milly went on day 58 and Daphne is on day 63.
The Hobbit, an unexpected journey also makes sense with Chief and Milly being planned for June but Chief surprised us. Then we thought perhaps it did not take. And then with the xrays, 7 really surprised us. 🙂 We were thinking bridges of Portland for the theme. Usually the first whelp is 3 possibly 4. And, before we knew that Daphne was having 5 I only have 5 booked for both litters, worrying I would over book and have to tell someone I do not have a puppy for them. Again the best laid plans.
The boys “whelp names” I am thinking will be Pippin, Sam, Frodo and Legolas (Lego) or perhaps Gandolf. I have to stare at them for a while to figure it out. The girls will perhaps be  Merry, Arwen and Rosie.  Pictures coming once everyone is warm, dry and I have more coffee. And get the nesting area for Daphne all set up. Forgive typos I am a bit rummy and have to look up how to spell the Hobbit names.
It has the makings for us of a historic doodle day. 🙂
