Blossom (Daisy) Whelped 5 stunning puppies

Blossom started out Monday Morning showing signs that whelp was coming. Of course, I was expecting the litter around Friday… Leave it to her to start her whelp on Labor Day. 🙂 Normal signs are not eatting, panting, heavy nesting and thinking they need to go out only to not really have the need.

The rest of the day had both Jeff and I following her every move. She progressed very slowly compared to our other doodles. Evening rolled around, sandwiches and shrimp for dinner and the other dogs were feed when she started her panting again around 5 PM just as Jeff and I were discussing plan E; since plan A was me being off on Friday, plan B was daughter covering on Saturday with me; plan C was Jeff and I had her covered on Sunday.

She took a long time for labor; but was a slow and steady battle. She was stellar even with a crowning puppy that would appear and be sucked back into the womb. As I fretted Daisy remained in her slow steady panting mode.

She whelped her first boy at 8:22 PM; a very nice blocky boy that appears to be a creme with mismarks. He was very energetic and before being out of the birth canal he had already latched onto the nipple. Time passed and an all red girl followed, also nice block and wavy coat. The next appearance was another red girl, with white chest and mismarks that I really love.  During her heavy labor of each puppy we would move the pups into a flannel lined box with a heating pad to give Daisy room but she showed her natural mothering instincts as she between pushes leaned her head over her whelp box to check on her “babies”.

Dogs have two horns, or “wombs” .  We think Daisy has finished the one horn as there was a very long pause before the next puppy emerged. Daisy during this time has been stellar; crying only once at the initial birth and then figuring it all out and became very focused as her mother instinct kicked in. Jeff was also so calm and relaxed with her (and I and daughter through the phones).

The next birth was a male; wonderful mismarks and more toffee color;with mismarks that I think might be a parchment once he dries. Time tells as at birth in each of their birth sacs the colors can be darkened by natural protiens that have feed them through the pregnancy. And then we waited for more then a couple of hours for the final puppy to be born. Jeff had made a call to our vet as we worried about this last one. We have heard of long jags of time between pups but we personally have not experienced it until this whelp.

Shortly after she started having contracts and then at the end of 6 hours from the first pup, the final male was whelped. Healthy, hungry, and blocky red with I think a wonderful muzzle mismark.

I took videos and pictures but since it is 2:24 AM it will have to wait until tomorrow. I am getting my pillows and settling in next to Daisy and the whelp.

Big day today! Daisy went from Maiden to Mother, a whelp was born and breathed air for the first time, Jeff and I learned the art of letting things unfold as they are meant to be again.
