5 Weeks

Well the first part of their 5 weeks the puppies discovered the flight crate without a door is the most wonderful fort! They pile in and out, in and out. A new thing to explore and sleep in; poor old whelp box feels neglected as they pile in and paw and play. Yesterday was the day of removing the whelp box and the flight crate along with blankets give them a sleep area the ugodog their potty place, although they are still learning this. As I said, this week is a messy week as the weaning has begun and meat in means output as well.

Yes, another adventure was the introduction to meat and milk in the puppy bowl. Talk about treasure! Their tails were wagging with the new taste. They are now being moved to wet puppy food only and today will get some dry food softened, mixed with the wet as Belle is really weaning them now. All the puppies have puppy teeth and more are coming in. Toes are being discovered as well as other puppies tails. I am still waiting for them to discover their own tail and chase it; but it will be here soon.

The rice mixture is a messy sticky mess, as is the wet food as they still walk through it. This next week they will transition to not walking through as their brains are soaking up everything now.

Tonight they get a bath and a little eye trim of their eye guard hair that grows towards their eyes at this stage. Their coat is getting longer and curlier and after this bath once dry they start getting really cute and you start seeing what they are going to be in terms of coat and pack order while they play after the bath.

This will be a two person job and why the process will take place later. First I mop our home, warm it up and get tons of blankets and towels out. The kitchen counters are cleared, and the kitchen sink is lined with a towel and filled with warm water. Pitchers are at hand, for rinsing as well as cotton pads for drying ears. One person mans the sink the other the towel for drying. I will try to grab the camera in between.

The puppies will run around and romp and play as dogs do when they are wet so we will have blankets and toys down and the big dogs put up for this first adventure. We do this to watch just their interaction with each other when wet and playful. When they are dry and tired from the after bath romp, Jeff will hold them and I will trim their eye hair with a small handheld groomers clipper. Then it is play with the big dogs and they typically are wiped out.

While they play we will be rotating laundry, cleaning the sink out, cleaning the puppy play pen and preparing to mop after the pups romp. It’s a pizza night. 🙂

For the rest of this 5th week their days will be setting of “just their pack” and the puppy pen. The sixth week they will meet and interact a little with our neighbors children, get more time out and about, step outside for the first time, get their microchips and shots at our vets. But, I am getting ahead of myself.

My posts will become more infrequent as they will require more and more time. And so, here we are with time passing so quickly. And shortly, they will be with their forever homes. About 14 weeks ago, they were just a gleam in Chief and Belle’s eye. Amazing isn’t it?
